The 40 acres of grounds provide the most ideal setting for a wide range of learning and are an essential component of the 24 hour curriculum. In line with Curriculum for Excellence, Troup’s teaching approach outdoors "can enhance and integrate a huge range of activities across the whole curriculum - activities which connect learners with their environment, their community, their society and themselves."
Outdoor learning provides so many opportunities. It can promote a range of physical skills and interests such as skiing, hill-walking, horse riding, kayaking, sailing, fishing and mountain biking. However a main focus at Troup House is the observable improvement in young people’s ability to work and trust each other when undertaking challenging activities on the ropes course, their clear understanding of palpable risk when on the spider web or their increase in self esteem when mastering the zip line or the Jacob's ladder.
